The Hi-Hat Club

For the past few years Melting Pot Music has teamed up with photographer Robert Winter to bring you the freshest installment of European hip-hop producers. Each LP release in the Hi-Hat Club series includes a book of photos and an accompanying showcase usually in Berlin, Germany. The Hi-Hat Club is made up of beat makers from around western Europe, showing their take on downtempo hip-hop. A great compilation by some very talented producers.

Vol. 1 Testiculo Y Uno – Download
This first volume of the Hi-Hat series features producers Hulk Hodn and Twit One, two of the biggest names in the burgeoning Cologne, Germany hip-hop scene.

Vol. 2 Suff Daddy – Suff Draft Download
With samples from B.I.G. to the Isley brothers, you can tell Suff daddy has his American music down. Nice drum driven beats over some melodic synths. Suff means “drinking heavy” in German, now based in Berlin, he grew up listening to 90s American rap and his music shows the influence.

Vol. 3 Dexter – The Jazz Files Download
With volume 3 German producer Dexter shows his love for jazzstrumentals. Using old jazz records and samples from the NBC program “The subject is jazz” with new drums, he creates a timeless beattape.

Vol. 4 Brenk & Fid Mella – Chop Shop Download
Starting off with a Trey the Truth sample Brenk and Fid Mella bring a new style of production to the series. The Chop Shop is soulful and banging with elements of glitch and electronica that the other LPs lack. Fid Mella is originally from Meran, Italy but now lives in Vienna with Brenk. They are doing work with a ton of MCs look for more to come.

Kankick

Download – Acid Massive Musical
Hailing from Oxnard, Cali and the deep blunted basement of high school friend Madlib comes Kankick, born from the same downtempo big beat, Dilla inspired hip-hop. Something about Oxnard makes people wanna roll up, sit back and drop some soulful instrumental hip-hop. Kankick started out as a member of the Lootpack along with Madlib, Wild Child, and DJ Romes. He later split and formed the Funk Farm, which also included DJ Babu (Dilated/Beat Junkies). He has the genre to a tee; drum dominant and soul sampling, but he expands on parts and is smoother around the edges, making it accessible to the masses. His songs, mostly all under 3 min, are creations in themselves, many of them having the weight to create much longer tracks with a verse or two. Acid Massive Musical flows well as an album, like sampling a record collection with a drum kit, but with so much more inflection and composition than any radio rap.

DJ Ezasscul – Jazz Meditation 3 (The Final Installment)

Here is the final installment to the Jazz Meditation series from Daily favorite, DJ Ezasscul. Rusty mentioned this earlier but I think it’s worth repeating – he is nineteen years old. The last time I saw a teenager with this much game was Lebron’s rookie season. You can hear a lot of Pete Rock’s influence on Ezasscul’s sound, someone that he self-admittedly tries to emulate. But where Pete Rock’s soulful, funky hip-hop flirted with a jazzy sound, Ez covers his beats with piano, sax, and horn layers that take you back to Monk, Coltrane, and Davis. This series is pure genius. Mad respect to DJ Ezasscul, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.

Download Chrometrails

This year in May he released High Life, a much more hip-hop, soul sampled beat tape with tons of organic instruments and melodies reminiscent of genre masters such as J Dilla and Madlib. He deff deserves to be named among them. Look for more to come from this guy.

The Foreign Exchange – Dear Friends An Evening with the Foreign Exchange

The Foreign Exchange is rapper Phonte (Little Brother) and Dutch producer Nicolay. They came together originally trading beats and verses over the interweb. This live acoustic performance was recorded with 40 friends in a North Carolina studio. It accompanies their third release Authenticity.

Here is their first CD Connected, much more hip-hop. Download

Gramatik – No Shortcuts

Here is the No Shortcuts album. I had to throw this up because it was so different from the Street Bangerz Vols. Much harder and deeper bass lines, raw synths and more whomp. Still has some nice soulful samples that make you wanna, clap yo hands.

Jazzstrumentals

A new genre I have been digging lately called Jazzstrumentals. Hip-hop drums over smooth jazz melodies.

Cincinnati producer with some smooth jazz remakes of classic hip-hop tracks and other instrumentals. Download

UK rapper turned producer who has worked with some big names throughout his career. This is vol 1 of Funky DL‘s crispy jazz instrumentals spanning his career. Download

18 year old out of Brooklyn with a couple of more uptempo jazz beats, with some vocal samples. A little more progressive style, look for more to come from this kid. Download

Gramatik

If you love hip-hop instrumentals, you need to check out Gramatik. Born in Slovenia, this guy grew up listening to American funk, jazz, soul, and of course, hip-hop. By the time he was in his early twenties, he had developed a rep as one of the top producers in the Slovenia rap game (yeah, they have a rap game). Apparently, people in America have also started to feel his stuff.
Recently signed to the newly established Pretty Lights Music Label, his first album drops on July 12. From what I’ve heard, his new shit will have live instruments to spruce up his raw, hip-hop style into something that will make you want to dance. I can’t wait for that, but if you’re a hip-hop head, his earlier mixtape series, Street Bangerz, is something you gotta have in your library. This is the type of stuff that will keep your head nodding for hours.

>Beastie Boys Instrumentals

To the knowledge of little the Beastie Boys have created two albums that push the boundaries of what three white boys from Brooklyn can do. In 1996 and 2007 they release two purely instrumental albums, The In Sound From Way Out! and The Mix Up respectively. These albums demonstraighted a neo-jazz funk seldom seen in the punk rap lyrics of Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “MCA” Yauch, and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz. I even had a few friends clueless as to who they were listening to when I played the Mix Up. Check out these two albums, and if you ever get the chance to see them live don’t miss out, they all play instruments, and rap.
